You are not alone!

The unintentional passing of urine is a serious, hygienic and social problem for those affected. Every twelfth man and every fourth women is confronted with this problem at some point.
In Germany alone approximately 4 million people are incontinent in some way. Most people think of bladder weakness as a delicate topic with lots of taboos.
Even though attitudes towards this problem have changed in recent years a lot of people suffering from incontinence keep it to themselves rather than talking about it openly.

The constant fear of wetting oneself in public and smelling of urine leads sufferers to avoid contact with others. Often they rarely go out and suffer from loneliness and depression.
Incontinence is not an illness, but a symptom of a deficient bodily function. It isn’t a “normal” symptom of old age, however it often does occur as you grow older.
Incontinence in Western Europe is the most widespread, but least well-known health problem.

Different types of incontinence

Bladder weakness can occur in different situations, different forms and to different degrees. Here we outline the different types of incontinence:

Urge incontinence, which is identified by an urgent urge to urinate. Sufferers often don’t have enough time to reach a toilet.

Stress incontinence often affects women who have had multiple children or can be the result of reduced circulation due to hormone deficiencies during the menopause. The drop by drop leakage of urine can be triggered by heavy lifting, coughing or sneezing. Psychological problems can also be a trigger.

Whereas overflow incontinence more often affects men. This is for example due to
an age related enlargement of the prostate which constricts the urethra, which means urine builds up in the bladder. The pressure on the bladder increases until the urine streams out. Other causes of overflow incontinence could be narrowing of the foreskin or frequent catheter placement.

Reflex incontinence can be caused if all nerve endings in the back are fully disconnected, as is the case for paraplegic patients or those suffering from multiple sclerosis. Illnesses such as diabetes, fistulas or tumours in the spinal cord may also be determined as causes for uncontrolled, unconscious and spontaneous leakage of urine.
